Above all else, we would like to express our sorrow at this tragedy and pass on our deepest condolences to the family of the victim. This was an isolated incident which in no way reflects on the everyday life and general functioning of the island or its standards of security. On an island like Zakynthos, which receives over 1,000,000 visitors in the summer, there may be such cases, unpredictable in their very nature, which despite due care and diligence cannot easily be prevented. What we endeavour to do is maintain consistent rigour in:
· Quality control on alcoholic beverages and enforcing sanctions where standards are not met.
· Checks, regular police patrols and security measures.
Unfortunately, when any destination receives a great influx of visitors, authorities cannot control all individual behavior, especially that which has resulted from heat-of-the-moment reactions and aberrant psychological states. It is indisputably a tragic event, which has sent shock waves through our local community and local and regional authority. For this reason, please be assured that we are already looking into any possible measures or steps that could help us avert such incidents in the future. Our priority is for visitors to enjoy our hospitality and the beauty of our landscape in the context of quiet and safe holidays and it is our resolve to eliminate, wherever and whenever we can, the few occurrences that are not typical of the island.
We would like once again to convey our genuine sadness and sympathy to the family of the victim and to stress that we will do everything humanly possible to ensure that we never again witness such profoundly disturbing events that denigrate our island.
