Who we are
AWA Vienna is a non-profit organization of English-speaking women from around the world who are interested in connecting and contributing to the local community. Our membership is composed of both newcomers and long term residents of Vienna. We represent a wide range of ages, backgrounds, and nationalities, from professional women and students, to full-time mothers and seniors.
The American Women’s Association (AWA) of Vienna was originally founded in 1924 by diplomatic and military wives to assist American women overseas and to aid community and charitable organizations. After an inactive period during and following WWII, the AWA was re-established in 1961. Today, the AWA is a vibrant and friendly community which hosts over 250 members from 40 different countries, and continues the tradition of women helping women.
Our aim is to create an open and inviting environment where women can build friendships, engage with the community, and experience all that Vienna (and Austria) have to offer by participating in volunteer-run activities and events.
We are also enthusiastic about raising funds and providing assistance to disadvantaged women, children and families. Our Charity Fundraising team organizes programs and events throughout the year. In 2016 we raised 5,300 EUR for ‘Wiener Frauenhäuser’, an organization helping physically and emotionally abused women.
Following the tradition of supporting the international community in Vienna we continue to publish our book – ‘Living in Vienna’, an essential guide covering all the different aspects of the expat life in Vienna. It is available from the AWA office or via Amazon.com
